Kitchen Essentials

img-20150806-wa0002Whether you are new to student life or if tour a student that doesn’t cook. This page could help you. There are loads of cooking ingredients ideal on a student budget  but here are the key kitchen essentials that I always have a supply of.

Cupboard

  • Cooking oil
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Italian mixed herbs
  • Lemon juice
  • Fruit
  • Bread & tortilla wraps- can be used for a variety of recipes
  • Dry Pasta
  • Dry Rice & noodles
  • Potatoes- These can be boiled, mashed and roasted or as a jacket
  • Flour- have fun in the kitchen and make your own cakes
  • Sugar
  • Tins- baked beans, tomatoes, soup
  • Kidney beans- These are great for chilies, curries and salads.
  • Tinned Sweetcorn & tuna- ideal mixed with mayo for sandwiches, pasta and jacket potatoes.
  • Tomato puree
  • Soy sauce
  • Cereal & Porridge oats
  • Tea, coffee& hot chocolate- great morning pick me up and helps relieve stress

Fridge/ Freezer

  • Milk / dairy alternatives
  • Salad
  • Tomatoes
  • Mixed peppers
  • Butter
  • Cheese
  • Eggs
  • Mayonaise & tomato ketchup
  • Meat
  • Fish- salmon and white fish is best and relaitvely cheap
  • Frozen vegetables
Kitchen Utensils 

Do some research or check out your accommodation as some essentials may be provided.   Also some shops sell whole kits ideal for students, rather buying utensils individually and   mostly work out cheaper.

  • Toaster and kettle
  • Microwave
  • Cutlery
  • Glasses/ Tumblers
  • Crockery- Mugs, plates & bowls- check that they are microwavable
  • Sauce pan- ideal for boiling food. I also have a big one ideal for bolognese and curries
  • Non-stick frying pan
  • Mixing bowl and measuring jug
  • Graterpot-and-pans
  • Tea towels
  • Colander
  • Sharp knife
  • Chopping board
  • Potato masher
  • Tin opener & bottle opener
  • Platic tubs for leftovers
  • Large plastic or wooden spoon
  • Fish slice- ideal for lifting and turning food
  • Baking tray
